Adelaide High School is a coeducational state high school located on the corner of West Terrace and Glover Avenue in the Adelaide Parklands. After the Advanced School for Girls, this school became the second government high school in South Australia and the first coeducational public high school in the state. The current enrolment stands at around 1,500 students.
Adelaide High School has gained a reputation for its specialisation in language education. It stands out by providing students with the opportunity to enrol through one of the three Special Entry Programmes, focusing on Languages, Cricket, and Rowing.
Students have access to a wide range of facilities, including a library, gymnasium, various sports courts, cricket nets, ovals, Performing Arts Centre, science labs, and lecture theatres. The school additionally possesses a boatshed situated along the River Torrens, serving as a storage facility for the school’s extensive collection of rowing boats and as a training ground for the school’s dedicated rowing crews. Additionally, there is a shared rowing facility at West Lakes, which is utilised by Unley High School and Norwood Morialta High School. In 2015, a new wing was added to the southern side of the school. Building 4, which used to house the Languages, Art and Library areas, has been renovated to accommodate the Languages, Maths and Arts learning areas. In 2019, the school took the initiative to self-fund a Performing Arts Centre Refurbishment. Then, in 2021, they made a strategic move by investing $24 million to build a new centre at the heart of the school. This expansion was a proactive measure to accommodate the growing number of Year 7 students joining the school.
The school is divided into four “houses” that students proudly represent in various sporting and other events held within the school. The houses were named after former principals of the school. The house names include Adey (red), Macghey (blue), Morriss (green), and West (yellow). The school organises various sporting events such as the intra-house swimming carnival and athletics carnival. The houses vie for the SJ Dowdy Cup, named in honour of former Principal Stephen Dowdy.
Adelaide High School provides a variety of sporting opportunities for both girls and boys, with special interest programmes such as cricket and rowing. The Adelaide High School cricket programme offers talented cricketers from outside the school zone the chance to join the school, just like the Adelaide High School rowing club. The rowing club has a selection process for identifying talented individuals from outside the school zone who can apply to enrol at the school.
Adelaide High has been participating in a sporting exchange with Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School since 1913, and with Melbourne High School since 1910. This event has a rich history and has been a staple in the state’s sports scene for many years. Both Exchanges vie for the Prefects’ Cup. The exchanges take place in early Term 3 and the venue changes every year. There are a wide range of competitions in various sports including Australian rules football, soccer, tennis, rowing, basketball, netball, softball, chess, debating, theatre sports, volleyball, cross country/athletics, badminton, table tennis and hockey. Past sports matches against Melbourne have included lacrosse, baseball and hockey.
Both exclusive entry programmes actively engage in various games and regattas throughout the year, building up to the highly anticipated main events. The 5 Highs Cricket Carnival takes place in December, featuring matches against Melbourne High School, Sydney Boys High School, Brisbane State High School, and Kent Street Senior High School. The Head of the River Regatta, a significant rowing event, takes place in either March or April. The establishment of this regatta dates back to 1922, when Adelaide High School and St Peter’s College came together to create it. Additionally, the volleyball teams have the opportunity to travel to the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup in Melbourne, which takes place in December.
