Located on the Sturt campus of Flinders University in Bedford Park, a southern suburb of Adelaide, the Australian Science and Mathematics School (ASMS) is a coeducational public senior high school for Years 10–12. Since the school is not restricted to a specific zone, it draws students from various parts of the Adelaide metropolitan area, as well as from regional, interstate, and international locations. Australian Science and Mathematics School aims to equip its students for success in higher education, with a focus on mathematics and science. The Australian Science and Mathematics School has a unique approach to education, focusing on fostering a passion for learning in students and teachers alike. Students are encouraged to take charge of their own educational journey. Australian Science and Mathematics School strives to empower students to take control of their own learning and to develop self-reliance in completing academic assignments.
Established in 2003, the Australian Science and Mathematics School currently enrolls approximately 380 students. Since the school is tailored to offer an adult environment for senior school students, there is no requirement for a school uniform. This encourages a diverse range of cultural and social expressions and norms. The Australian Science and Mathematics School benefits greatly from its close partnership with Flinders University, located on the same campus. This collaboration allows the school to share resources such as the library, cafeteria, student services, transportation, recreational areas, and parking lots. Additionally, the Australian Science and Mathematics School has reserved access to lecture halls and specialized science and support facilities. In addition, students at the Australian Science and Mathematics School working with Flinders University’s Science and Technology Enterprise Partnership (STEP) could participate in research projects across various sectors including business, industry, and universities.
The Australian Science and Mathematics School provides a specialized education in science and mathematics while also offering a well-rounded curriculum that prepares students to earn their South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) qualification. The Year 10/11 curriculum is structured with interdisciplinary Central Studies that rotate annually to provide students with a varied learning experience. In Year 12, the curriculum includes standard SACE Stage 2 subjects like Mathematics, Science, English, and Humanities.
In 2022, the 10/11 students participated in the inaugural “Field Trip Week”, engaging in activities both on and off school grounds. This week aimed to expand the students’ understanding of their current Central Studies.
