California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB or Cal State Monterey Bay) is a public university located in Monterey County, California. The main campus of California State University Monterey Bay is situated on the grounds of the former military base Fort Ord, spanning across Seaside and Marina, approximately one mile from Monterey Bay along the Central Coast of California. California State University Monterey Bay also has campuses in Monterey and Salinas. Established in 1994, California State University Monterey Bay is a member of the California State University system and holds accreditation from the WASC Senior College and University Commission. This university is designated as a Hispanic-serving institution.
California State University Monterey Bay was established in 1994 with an initial student population of 654 students. The classes commenced on August 28, 1995. Peter Plympton Smith served as the founding president. This campus was the 22nd addition to the California State University system. California State University Monterey Bay provides a wide range of 23 bachelor’s degrees, 7 master’s degrees, and teaching credentials.
For the fall 2020 semester, California State University Monterey Bay reported 6,276 undergraduate students, 595 graduate students, and 186 full-time faculty members. The university functions based on the semester system. Vanya Quiñones became the president in August 2022 through appointment.
California State University Monterey Bay in partnership with Hartnell College, created CS-in-3, a three-year computer science programme supported by grants from the Foundation set up by Matsui Nursery. An impressive donation of 210 acres of prime agricultural land, valued at US$20 million, was generously granted to the Hartnell College Foundation.
In spring 2020, the student population consisted of 62% females and 38% males. 33% of students were under 21 years old, 45% were between 21 and 24, 14% fell between 25 and 30, and 8% were 31 or older. Business administration was the most popular major at 13%, followed by psychology at 11%, computer science at 9%, kinesiology at 8%, and biology at 8%. 43% of students originated from Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties within California, with 53% coming from other areas in California, 2% from different U.S. states, and 3% from international locations. Approximately 32% of students came from low-income backgrounds, while slightly more than half (53%) were the first in their families to attend college. CSU Monterey Bay has a diverse student body, with 14% freshmen, 12% sophomores, 27% juniors, and 35% seniors. The university also has a significant number of transfer students. 9% of the student population consisted of graduate students, while 2% were pursuing credentials and 1% were post-baccalaureate students.
In the autumn of 2018, California State University Monterey Bay had the second highest enrollment percentage of Americans of unknown race or ethnicity in the California State University system. Around half of the students at California State University Monterey Bay reside on campus.
