Capilano University (CapU) is a public university in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is situated on the slopes of the North Shore Mountains and offers programs that cater to the Sea-to-Sky Corridor and the Sunshine Coast.
Capilano University was founded in 1968 as a college and later achieved university status in 2008. The university is named after Chief Joe Capilano, a significant leader of the Squamish Nation, an Indigenous group native to the area.
Capilano University’s degree programs have received approval from the Government of British Columbia’s Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training. The university’s ability to grant degrees is determined by British Columbia’s University Act. In 2012, Capilano University achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Canadian university to receive accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) in Washington. This accreditation is granted by one of the six major regional agencies in the U.S. that are recognized by the United States Department of Education.
Capilano University’s sports teams, The Blues, have an impressive track record of success. They have achieved 15 national titles in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association and an impressive 61 provincial titles in the Pacific Western Athletic Association.
The university was established in 1968 by school boards and residents of the North Shore and Howe Sound to meet the demand for a public institution that would cater to the local communities in the northwest of Vancouver. The initial enrollment consisted of 784 students, and now the university attracts a large number of students each year, reaching over 12,000 students. It provides a wide variety of programmes such as undergraduate degrees, associate degrees, certificates, and diplomas. Capilano University is particularly renowned for its programs in arts and entertainment management, business, film and animation, early childhood education, and outdoor recreation. Capilano College’s designation was changed to a university in 2008, and it has since experienced significant growth, now enrolling approximately 12,700 students annually as of 2019. Capilano University offers a wide range of academic programs, including liberal arts, professional, and career programs that are highly regarded both nationally and internationally. These programs provide students with the opportunity to earn degrees, diplomas, and certificates.
