The university was established in Essen in 1990 with the aim of serving the needs of working individuals. It received state recognition on 18 September 1993 and started operating in September 1994. During the initial year, a total of 149 students were enrolled in the Master of Business Administration programme. In 1998, they started to broaden their reach to additional locations beyond Essen. In 2005, they started providing engineering courses in collaboration with the Ruhr University Bochum.
