Long Island University Brooklyn is renowned as one of the largest and most comprehensive private universities in the United States. Long Island University Brooklyn is conveniently situated at the bustling intersection of Flatbush and DeKalb Avenues, right across from the popular Junior’s restaurant and City Point. The campus benefits from the convenient convergence of multiple New York City Subway services at DeKalb Avenue, Nevins Street, and Jay Street–MetroTech. The Atlantic Terminal, located just three blocks from campus, is conveniently close to the Long Island Rail Road’s Atlantic Branch.
The former Brooklyn Paramount Theatre holds the distinction of being the world’s first theatre constructed exclusively for talking pictures. The theatre, located next to the original core campus, was acquired by LIU in 1960 and transformed into a gymnasium in 1963.
The inaugural session at Long Island University Brooklyn, situated at 300 Pearl Street, attracted an impressive enrollment of 312 students hailing from the nearby communities. A significant portion of students were immigrants or the offspring of immigrants, with many being pioneers in their families when it came to pursuing higher education.
In 1929, Long Island University Brooklyn formed a partnership with the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy, which is now recognised as LIU Pharmacy (the Arnold and Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences). In the late 1960s, some trustees suggested selling the Brooklyn Campus to fund a new graduate campus on Long Island. Protests erupted as students and faculty voiced their opposition to the proposed plans. In 1972, administrators and faculty members successfully negotiated the first collectively bargained faculty agreement at a private university in the United States. In the autumn of 2016, the university implemented a controversial strategy by locking out its faculty union and bringing in administrators and replacement hires to teach classes. The lockout led to a student walkout and protest, causing a setback of two weeks in the semester. The faculty at Long Island University Brooklyn took action by voting to remove President Kimberly Cline from her position.
Before 2019, Long Island University Brooklyn was the sole unit of the LIU system participating in Division I athletics, boasting a total of 18 varsity teams. The school’s mascot proudly represented the Blackbirds.
During the 1935-1936 season, the men’s basketball team achieved an impressive feat by winning all 25 of its games, solidifying their position as the top team in the country. Given the inclusion of basketball as an Olympic sport, it was highly likely that the five starting players for the United States basketball team in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin would also be the five starters at Long Island University Brooklyn. However, due to the oppressive anti-Jewish government in Germany, the team conducted a confidential vote and decided against taking part.
