Loreto College Marryatville is an exceptional educational institution that caters to the needs of girls in Marryatville, an inner-eastern suburb of Adelaide. With its prime location just 4 kilometres from the bustling city centre, Loreto College offers a comprehensive range of primary and secondary day and boarding programmes. As a respected Roman Catholic school, Loreto College Marryatville provides a nurturing environment for students to thrive academically and personally.
Founded in 1905, Loreto College is part of a global network overseen by the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (IBVM). It serves around 1,000 students from Reception to Year 12, with 70 of them being boarding students.
The initial Loreto Convent in Adelaide was established on Sydenham Road, Norwood in 1905. The school began with just five students and functioned out of a modest house. After two years, the school relocated to a more spacious house on Eastry Street and The Parade, Norwood.
In December 1920, due to a growing number of students, the school relocated to its current location known as “The Acacias,” a spacious 5.25-acre plot in Marryatville. The new schoolhouse was inaugurated in February 1921. The junior school was cleverly situated in the ballroom, while the billiard room was transformed into a dining room. Additionally, the original dining room underwent a remarkable conversion, now serving as a beautiful chapel. Senior classes were conducted in two rooms located on the ground floor, while the first floor accommodated the boarders for their sleeping arrangements. The nuns resided in the former servants’ quarters.
In 1925, the stables were transformed into classrooms for the junior school. In 1946, the former ballroom underwent a transformation and became a chapel, while the previous chapel was repurposed into a dining room for boarding students. A new wing was inaugurated on 27 May 1951, featuring classrooms on the lower level and dormitories for the boarders on the upper floor. In 1959, a science lab and additional classrooms were incorporated into the facility.
The Junior School was constructed in 1961, while the Mary Ward wing of the Senior School was added in 1969. In response to the growing student population, new buildings and facilities were constructed, including the Gymnasium and Art facilities, which were completed in 1998. Prior to 1998, the Eastern District was home to two exclusive all-boys colleges, namely St. Ignatius and Rostrevor.
In 2005, four additional middle school classrooms were constructed in the junior school to accommodate Year 7 students and Chinese language classes. Montessori, along with an unidentified partner, established the Loreto Bapthorpe Early Learning Centre, a co-educational institution that commenced operations in early 2006. In 2005, additional features such as Out of School Hours care, the new Portrush Road wall, car parking, and landscaping were also developed.
In 2006, a Hospitality and Food Technology Centre was established with the aim of enhancing and broadening the range of curriculum options available. In 2007, a new Boarding Precinct Development and the St Gertrude’s Music Centre were unveiled, showcasing the school’s commitment to growth and innovation. The St Anne’s Performing Arts Centre was opened in 2010.
