RMIT University Vietnam is the Vietnamese branch of the prestigious Australian university, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. The institution boasts three campuses strategically situated in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Danang.
RMIT was granted permission to operate in Vietnam, making it the first completely foreign-owned university to do so. With a track record of success back to 2000, RMIT University Vietnam has been recognised by the Vietnamese Government with an impressive 19 Golden Dragon Awards for their outstanding achievements in education.
In 1998, the Vietnamese government extended an invitation to the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia to establish a fully foreign-owned university in Vietnam. In 2000, it received a licence from the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment to provide undergraduate and postgraduate education, training and research.
In 2001, it acquired and renovated a 19th-century French Colonial building and its surrounding grounds in District 3, Ho Chi Minh City. Students informally call the building on Pham Ngoc Thach Street “the Castle.” A second campus in Hanoi was established in 2004.
The current campus of Ho Chi Minh City is situated in the Phu My Hung area of the South Saigon development in District 7. The initial academic buildings were unveiled in 2005 on the expansive purpose-built campus.[4] In 2011, the recreation complex and residential centres were unveiled, showcasing their impressive features and amenities.
In 2018, a Foreign Language Training Centre was established in Danang. The centre offers a range of English language programmes.
RMIT has received 19 Golden Dragon Awards for its outstanding education from the Vietnamese Ministry of Trade since 2003. The company has been recognised for its outstanding achievements in innovation and community service, receiving prestigious awards from the Australian Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, it has been honoured with Certificates of Merit from the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee and the Hanoi Government. In 2008, RMIT University Vietnam was recognised for its educational achievements that greatly contributed to the social and economic development of Vietnam. The prime minister of Vietnam, Nguyen Tan Dung, awarded the university with a Certificate of Merit, acknowledging its significant impact. In 2011, RMIT University Vietnam was honoured with a Certificate of Merit from the Vietnam Minister of Education and Training.
