St. Michael’s University School (abbreviated SMUS) is an independent day and boarding school located in the municipality of Saanich, which is the largest and most populous municipality in the Capital Regional District and on Vancouver Island. Notable individuals who have held the position of headmaster in the past include Robert Snowden (1995-2017), David Penaluna (1988–94), and John Schaffter (1977–88). St. Michael’s University School was established in 1906 by Capt. R. V. Harvey, the Rev. W. W. Bolton, and J. C. Barnacle. In 1910, K. C. Symons established St. Michael’s University School, marking a significant milestone four years later. St. Michael’s University School stood out due to its significant enrollment of local day students, which was uncommon compared to University School’s predominantly boarding student population. Dealing with financial challenges and the unfortunate loss of its headmaster in 1970, University School joined forces with St. Michael’s in 1971, resulting in the birth of St. Michael’s University School. In 1973, the school expanded its enrollment to include grade 1 and 2 students, marking an important milestone in its history. In 1978, the school took a significant step forward by accepting girls as day and boarding students in grades 10–12. This marked the beginning of a transformative journey towards full coeducation, which was achieved in 1985. The campus underwent a significant expansion in 1985. In 1993, the boarding houses at St. Michael’s University School were given new names to honor the school’s six founders: Bolton, Harvey, Winslow, Timmis, Symons, and Barnacle. St. Michael’s University School provides Advanced Placement (AP) courses for high school students, enabling them to engage in college-level studies during their secondary school years. These courses have gained global recognition and can provide students with a competitive advantage when it comes to university admissions and academic readiness. As of 2012, St. Michael’s University School students have the highest average number of APs taken among all schools in the country. A single student has completed an impressive 15 APs, setting a remarkable record. St. Michael’s University School students outperformed the global average with an impressive average mean grade of 3.68. Out of the 650 exams across 25 different AP subjects taken by 245 SMUS students, an impressive 81% of them achieved grades of three or higher on the five-point scale. This surpasses the worldwide rate of 59% achieving grades of three or higher. It’s clear that the students at SMUS are excelling in their AP exams.
