The State University of New York at Fredonia, also known as SUNY Fredonia, Fredonia State, or Fredonia, is a public university located in Fredonia, New York. It is part of the State University of New York and is located in the westernmost region. Established in 1826, State University of New York at Fredonia holds a rich history as one of the oldest higher education institutes in the United States. It proudly stands as the seventh-oldest college in New York and the second-oldest public school in New York, following SUNY Potsdam (1816). Established in 1826 by its first principal Austin Smith, Fredonia Academy began with a humble enrollment of eight students. The inaugural classes commenced on October 4, 1826. In just one year, the academy saw an impressive enrollment of 136 students, with 81 boys and 55 girls. Back in 1827, it functioned as a state normal school. The educational institute achieved its highest enrollment in 1856, boasting a total of 217 students. In 2023, the college achieved university status after receiving designation from the state of New York. As a result, it underwent a name change and is now known as the State University of New York at Fredonia. Thanks to the university’s diverse range of graduate level programs, State University of New York at Fredonia successfully fulfilled the requirement for this change, which mandates that a state college must have a minimum of three programs. State University of New York at Fredonia has a rich history of focusing on music education at its state teachers’ colleges. However, it has expanded its offerings to include programs in various other fields, including a graduate division. State University of New York at Fredonia’s campus in Western New York spans an impressive 256 acres, showcasing its natural beauty. The student body consists of 3,236 students, including both undergraduates and graduates, hailing from 34 states and 19 countries.
