Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology is a renowned tertiary education institute in New Zealand, offering a wide range of programmes across multiple campuses. With locations in Rotorua, Tauranga, and other towns in the Bay of Plenty and South Waikato regions, students have access to exceptional educational opportunities. The formation of this organisation took place in May 2016, resulting from the merger of Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and Waiariki Institute of Technology. Toi Ohomai is one of the prominent ITPs (Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics) in New Zealand. The Waiariki Community College was established in Rotorua in April 1978. During the 1970s and 1980s, the college expanded its reach by opening new campuses in Tokoroa, Whakatane, Taupō, Tūrangi, and Kawerau. In 1998, the college underwent a name change to Waiariki Institute of Technology. The institute offered a diverse range of educational opportunities, including forestry, Māori studies, business management, journalism, sport, and music. In 1982, the Bay of Plenty Community College was established in Tauranga, later known as Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. The college initially offered a range of courses in administration, engineering, and agriculture, and later expanded its offerings to include fields like hospitality, tourism, and television. In 1991, the polytechnic had grown to include two main centres – Windermere Campus in Poike, and Bongard Centre in downtown Tauranga. In 2010, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic had a student population of 9,443. In May 1, 2016, these two institutions came together to create the Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology. The new name was given by the local iwi, symbolising the aspiration to reach great heights and be inspired by knowledge. As of 1 April 2020, Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology became part of Te Pūkenga (the New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology) along with the other 15 institutes of technology and polytechnics (ITPs).
