The primary Fort Garry campus, located on the picturesque Red River in south Winnipeg, encompasses more than 60 prominent teaching and research buildings. Spanning over 280 hectares (690 acres) of land, it offers a vast expanse for academic pursuits. Out of all these buildings, there are 33 dedicated to teaching, including 4 prestigious colleges: St. John’s College, St. Paul’s College, St. Andrew’s College, and University College. The remaining structures encompass a range of facilities, including laboratories, administrative and service offices, a research complex, and residences.
In 2013, the University of Manitoba sponsored an urban planning design competition to envision an extension to the Fort Garry Campus. Our objective is to enhance the overall campus experience and strategically maximise parking citation revenue. We aim to achieve this by creating an urban framework that integrates housing, university buildings, and public transportation in the surrounding area. The design submission that emerged as the winner came from Janet Rosenberg & Studio Inc. based in Toronto, along with Cibinel Architects Ltd. from Winnipeg. They collaborated with Landmark Planning & Design Inc. and ARUP Canada Inc., both also based in Winnipeg and Toronto respectively.
