Whitireia New Zealand, formerly known as Whitireia Community Polytechnic and Parumoana Community College (Māori: Te Kura Matatini o Whitireia), is a part of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, a vocational education provider in New Zealand that is government-owned and funded. Whitireia New Zealand was founded in 1986 as an independent tertiary education institute located on the beautiful shores of Porirua Harbour. Since 2015, it has been sharing its leadership council and chief executive with WelTec (Wellington Institute of Technology). In 2020, it became a subsidiary of Te Pūkenga through a merger with 15 other New Zealand tertiary education institutes. In 2022, Whitireia New Zealand and WelTec have a combined student population of 7,700 across their campuses in Wellington, Petone, and Porirua.
Whitireia New Zealand was established in 1986 in Porirua under the name Parumoana Community College. The institution underwent a name change in 1989, becoming Whitireia Community Polytechnic, and then again in 2010, when it was renamed Whitireia New Zealand. It formed a partnership with WelTec, resulting in the two organisations sharing a joint council. In 2018, the government provided Whitireia New Zealand with a NZ$15 million grant to help overcome their financial challenges. Shortly afterwards, the board was dismissed and replaced with a commissioner.
On 1 April 2020, Whitireia New Zealand, along with other Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics (ITPs) in New Zealand, became part of Te Pūkenga (New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology).
Dr Tūroa Royal served as the founding principal and CEO of Whitireia Community Polytechnic from 1986 to 1996. Deirdre Dale took over as his deputy from 1996 to 2006. Don Campbell served as the CEO from 2006 to 2015. When Chris Gosling assumed the position of CEO in 2015, he took on the responsibility of leading both Whitireia and WelTec, demonstrating his expertise in managing multiple organisations.
On 1 April 2020, Mark Oldershaw assumed the role of chief executive, succeeding Gosling. The date aligned with Whitireia becoming part of Te Pūkenga.
