William Angliss Institute Australia has been involved in various projects across multiple countries in Asia and the Pacific region. There are international joint venture campuses in China, specifically at Shanghai University in Shanghai, Nanjing Institute of Tourism and Hospitality in Nanjing, Zhejiang Tourism College in Hangzhou, and China Tourism Management Institute in Tianjin.
William Angliss Institute Australia provides a wide range of educational opportunities, including accredited traineeships and apprenticeships, certificates, diplomas and advanced diplomas, short courses, graduate certificates, bachelors and master degrees.
In 1940, a generous contribution from Melbourne businessman Sir William Charles Angliss paved the way for the establishment of a specialised trade or technical school. This institution was dedicated to offering top-notch training and educational opportunities specifically tailored to the hospitality and foods industries. Originally known as the William Angliss Food Trades School, this institution provided apprenticeship courses in various culinary disciplines such as pastry, butchery, breadmaking, baking, cooking.
During the 1960s, additional courses in hospitality administration, catering, and food and beverage service were introduced as links with the Food and Hospitality industries grew. Tourism courses were introduced in the 1970s. The school underwent several name changes, starting with William Angliss College and later becoming known as William Angliss Institute of TAFE.
In 2001, the Travel and Tourism Department of the Institute created a 3-month short course in Dance Music Event Operations. This course was designed to meet the demands of Melbourne’s thriving electronic dance scene and provide comprehensive training in the field. The course was accredited by the Victorian Qualifications Authority in 2003.
The Institute established The Coffee Academy in 2002, providing a range of educational opportunities for coffee enthusiasts. These include introductory Coffee@Home courses, in-depth sessions on coffee sensory evaluation, accredited courses in Espresso Making using top-notch commercial machines, and even exciting coffee tours abroad.
With a forward-thinking approach, the Institute implemented a pilot programme in 2005, utilising bulk phone-PDAs to enhance training and assessments. These devices were used to deliver engaging flash animation games designed by teachers, covering a range of subjects including coffee making, waiting, pastry baking, meat processing, and event management.
In 2006, Paul Bocuse, the highly acclaimed chef with numerous accolades, shared his expertise with cookery students at William Angliss Institute.
