Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) is a public university located in Montgomery, Alabama. Founded in 1967 by an act of the Alabama Legislature, it operates under the governance of the Auburn University Board of Trustees as part of the Auburn University system. Auburn University at Montgomery provides over 90 programs of study that lead to bachelor’s, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees. In 2018, Auburn University at Montgomery had over 5,200 students enrolled.
Established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature, Auburn University at Montgomery has a long history. The 500 acres of land where it stands were purchased by the McLemore family, heirs of James McLemore, who originally owned 7000 acres of land that was cultivated by enslaved individuals, followed by sharecroppers and tenant farmers.In March 1968, Dr. H. Hanly Funderburk, Jr., assumed the role of vice president and chief administrator of the newly established university. Auburn University at Montgomery was established in September 1969 with almost 600 students at the former Alabama Extension Center on Bell Street, adjacent to Maxwell AFB. After two years, Auburn University at Montgomery moved to a 500-acre campus on the McLemore Plantation tract, located 7 miles east of downtown Montgomery. The initial structures on campus included the Administration/Library building and Goodwyn Hall, which housed classrooms and faculty offices.
In 2018, Auburn University at Montgomery was acknowledged by U.S. News & World Report and Princeton Review for the excellence of its academic programs. Auburn University at Montgomery was ranked 22nd among regional universities in the South for its undergraduate teaching quality and 38th among public comprehensive universities in the South by U.S. News.
In the 2018-19 academic year, Auburn University at Montgomery had 4,632 undergraduate students and 579 graduate students. There is a higher percentage of female students compared to male students. White students make up 45% of the student population, followed by black students at 40%, Asian students at 2%, Hispanic students at 1%, and international students at 5%. The AUM includes five Colleges (Business, Education, Nursing and Health Sciences, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, and Sciences) providing bachelor, master, and specialist degree programs. Among the most sought-after bachelor’s degrees are business administration, nursing, liberal arts, biology, elementary education, and secondary education. The university’s nursing and medical laboratory sciences programs have placement rates exceeding 90 percent. Auburn University at Montgomery provides a joint doctorate program with Auburn University in Public Administration, and has recently introduced a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.
Auburn University at Montgomery offers a continuing education program with an annual enrollment of over 10,000 students. Continuing Education curricula encompass a variety of programs such as certificate programs, corporate education, community education, computer training, language courses (including English as a Foreign or Second Language), online training, and youth programs.
AUM’s College of Business is among the top 5% of business schools globally, accredited by The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International, and recognized as a “Best Business School” by The Princeton Review. AUM has been recognized as an operationally separate institution from Auburn University by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) since 1978.
